China: Since the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) confirmed the first outbreak in Liaoning Province on 3 August 2018, ASF were detected in 32 provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities/special administrative region. Hong Kong SAR detected ASF cases in Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long on 7 and 22 November 2023 [reference1, reference2 , reference3 ], and recently, in early December, a new outbreak was confirmed on a licensed pig farm in San Tin in Yuen Long where 19 out of 30 samples tested positive for the virus [reference4 , reference5 ]. In Taiwan Province, the Veterinary Research Institute detected two ASF viruses in sausages illegally brought by a passenger arriving from another Island. According to the institute, one of the viruses was the genotype II ASF virus which has been around in China since 2018; another was a new virus produced by a genetic reassortment [基因重組] of a low virulence genotype I virus with the common genotype II virus, detected for the first time from a pork product carried by travellers. The new virus was first confirmed in 2022, and subsequently discovered in Jiangsu, Henan, Inner Mongolia and other places. Experiments showed that the new virus is highly pathogenic and transmissible, and vaccines made by removing the virulence gene are unable to protect against the new ASF virus, referred to a paper*. During 2023 (as of 15 December), a total of 1,733 meat products were intercepted by the border control, of which 79.3% were from the mainland China; the detection rate of ASF virus from these products was higher this year (12.4%) than in 2021 (9.9%) and 2022 (11.8%)
